We profile some of the leaders of Tameside Council over the past 50 years.
Councillor Kieran Quinn
Droylsden’s Councillor Quinn was first elected to Tameside Council in 1994 becoming the Executive Leader in 2010 having previously held the Economic Development portfolio in the Executive Cabinet for ten years. He took over as Executive Leader at a time of enormous challenges for local government with the onset of austerity and the reduction in council budgets. Over his seven years leadership Tameside was transformed in a number of ways through his commitment to growth and reform.
Vision Tameside, the fastest broadband connection in the UK and outstanding teaching and learning facilities in state-of-the-art accommodation, bringing together the latest transport infrastructure of Metrolink. The restoration of Ashton Old Baths was an ambitious multi-million-pound project bringing back into use Ashton’s former municipal baths. Care Together is integrating health and social care in Tameside, putting us at the forefront of a new era in joined up working between local government and the NHS.
All these examples are a result of the drive, passion and leadership of Councillor Quinn – which was recognised by the Local Government Chronicle when Tameside Council won their prestigious Council of the Year award in 2016.
Councillor Kieran Quinn sadly passed away following a fall precipitated by a heart attack back in 2017. It has been announced as part of events to mark the 50th anniversary that the terrace area of the Tameside One building at Ashton Market, above the old Wilko store, is to be named in honour of the authority’s former executive leader.
