Whilst many bemoan the demise of the outdoor market square in Hyde, with it’s dwindling number of traders occupying stalls, the town does has a thriving market place. Tucked away in the bowels of the Mall can be found a hidden gem of market stalls, undercover on 3 levels. Hyde indoor market is a mix of stalls providing a myriad of choice provided by traders, some of whom have been in situ over 30 years, some longer.
As you enter one of two doorways situated half way along the Mall, you can find the unique Let’s Talk Tripe stall, small but perfectly formed, manned by Lyndon and Les. One of few places you can still buy this Northern delicacy from, along with black puddings and a range of tasty sausages, burgers and kebabs.
Also on this ground floor level can be found a repair service for all your I.T. devices, clothing and a baked potato stall offering a wide range of fillings plus hot drinks.
The upper level can be accessed by 2 staircases and a ramp for wheelchair access to the both the upper and lower levels.
On the top floor you can find some of the Market’s longer established businesses, such as Wilde’s green grocers, selling fresh, in season produce. Also on the upper level is the Deli counter, with its range of cooked meats, cheeses and chutneys.
You can get fresh meat from Neil Hibbert, whose family have been present in the market, offering a professional butchers service for decades. Another long serving favourite is Joe and Sons, watch and Jewellery stall, where you can find a wide range of timepieces for any interior or exterior location. Joe also offers a repair service and does battery replacement for wrist watches.
One of the newer stall holders are Derris and her family, who have a range of delicious homemade pies and cakes, along with fresh eggs and bread rolls.
Another unique stall is the Natural Health stall, which can be found in the back corner, which stocks herbs and vitamins hard to find on supermarket shelves.
If you take the stairs or ramp to the lower floor, Taunton’s pet stall, run by David and his family, can supply needs for a wide range of family pets, from foodstuff to collars, leads and pet toys. You can also find a well stocked greetings card stall, selling cards for all occasions, as well as wrapping paper and gift bags.
Also on this level is a large stall, packed with bedtime apparel, under garments and hosiery.
Tucked right at the back, Hyde and Seek records has a huge range of second hand vinyl and CDs for music lovers, with lots of great music from yesteryear waiting to be rediscovered.
There has also been a cafe for many years, located in this back corner, most recently occupied by Jerk Stop, who have now relocated. Though it is hoped a new tenant will soon be found.
Stalls are available for any new businesses looking for a place to locate. If interested, please contact Market Manager Luke Mirfin or call in the Market Managers office (opposite Derris’s Homemade Pies) on the upper floor.
The Indoor Market is open daily Monday to Saturday 9-5pm.
If you don’t use it…. You lose it.
