We profile some of the leaders of Tameside Council over the past 50 years.
Councillor Brenda Warrington
First elected to Tameside Council in 2002, Councillor Brenda Warrington represents the ward of Denton West. She served as the council’s lead member for Health and External Relations and Scrutiny as well as being chair of the Personal and Health Services Scrutiny Panel. She has also been the Civic Mayor of Tameside for the period 2012 to 2013.
It was the 31st January in 2018 when she was elected leader of the council following the sudden death of Councillor Kieran Quinn in December 2017. Her election as Tameside’s first female leader came as the nation marked 100 years of women’s suffrage – when women gained the right to vote. Councillor Brenda Warrington was also Chair of Greater Manchester Pension Fund during her period as the Executive Leader. During her leadership term the first challenge she faced was to ensure the completion of work on the new council and college complex Tameside One. The original contractor Carillion went into administration in January 2018 and Robertson was appointed to complete the build.
Under her role as executive member for Adult Social Care and Wellbeing as well as leader she was responsible for the integration of health and social care and merging the council and Tameside and Glossop CCG. In January 2020 she bstowed Dr Ron Hill MBE an honorary freeman of the borough of Tameside. The following month she joined the launch event for the new Tameside Wellness Centre in Denton.
Councillor Warrington was also in post when the world faced Coronavirus and the associated lockdowns as the council continued to offer vital services including those dealing with bereavement. She resigned as Executive Leader in May 2022 following a challenge and was succeeded by Councillor Ged Cooney.
