Students from Tameside College will be taking part in Small Business Saturday on 4th December, in Ashton town centre.

Small Business Saturday is a national event, which takes place each year on the first Saturday of December. Now in its ninth year, the event aims to raise awareness and support for local small businesses and charities, in the era of online shopping.

The official ‘Snowman and the Snow Dog’ characters will also be attending the event, which will take place on the Ashton market ground, opposite the college’s Tameside One campus.

Jackie Moores, principal at Tameside College, said: “I am very pleased that the college and our students at Tameside One will be involved in this event. Many of our students start businesses of their own in the local area or further afield, when they leave the college, so supporting this event is very important to us as a college. It is also a great opportunity for students to meet members of the community and develop their confidence and teamwork skills. I look forward to visiting the event on the day and would like to thank Ashton Town Team for inviting our students to take part.”

Small Business Saturday, now in its ninth year in the UK, is a campaign that has grown significantly each year with a record £1.1 billion spent with small businesses on Small Business Saturday in 2020, and 15.4 million people choosing to shop small.

Kevin Taylor, chair of Ashton Town Team, said: “Ashton Town Team is delighted to be hosting this event, in partnership with Tameside Markets, Tameside College and their students. It will be a fantastic opportunity for the college and the town centre, helping to raise awareness of our great local businesses and raising much needed funds for Willow Wood. There will be lots on offer and I hope that visitors to the market square enjoy meeting the students and sampling their goods. It’s more important than ever to shop local and I hope we have a great turnout on the day.”
