Tameside Council is moving ahead with exciting plans to restore Ashton Town Hall, the beloved Grade II listed building at the heart of Ashton-under-Lyne.
Following essential repairs to the façade and parapet and with improvements to the main steps on the way, the Council is now progressing with feasibility and design work to transform the Town Hall into a vibrant space by 2030. This forms part of a wider regeneration strategy for Ashton Town Centre, backed by £3.4 million in Government funding allocated specifically for the town. And is closely linked to the Market Square Transformation and Ashton Regeneration Partnership plans.
The vision for the restored Town Hall blends heritage with modern functionality, creating a vibrant hub for civic, cultural, and commercial activity. Proposed features include:
A revitalised Council Chamber and function room
A range of community spaces celebrating Ashton’s rich local heritage
Commercial spaces such as a wine bar, coffee shop, and restaurant to to complement the market ground offer and activity
Open-plan office spaces
A new light filled accessible entrance and potential extension to the rear
A budget of £91,000 has been approved to support this next stage of design. The restoration will happen in phases, with construction expected to start in 2028 and finish by 2030, subject to confirmation of funding. Every step will meet strict heritage and planning standards.
Councillor Andrew McLaren Deputy Leader and Executive Cabinet Member for Growth, Housing and Homelessness, said: “Ashton Town Hall is a cornerstone of our civic heritage. This restoration will not only preserve its legacy but also create new opportunities for community, culture, and business in the heart of Ashton.”
