On Friday July 7th, Ashton councillors, MP Jonathan Reynolds and Executive Leader of Tameside Council, Councillor Ged Cooney were invited to Ashton Central Mosque.  Also joining them was the Civic Mayor, Councillor Councillor Tafheen Sharif and Kevin Taylor BEM, Chair of Ashton Town Team. Hosted by the Imam Ghulam Moyhuddin, the event introduced attendees to the Muslim faith and the local history of Muslims in the borough.

It also served to celebrate the appointment of Councillor Sharif as the first Muslim and ethnic minority person to be appointed Civic Mayor of Tameside since the borough was created on April 1, 1974. The event was completed with a tour of the Mosque and refreshments were served.
