Not Ned are a 3-piece band from Denton, Manchester, that take their name from their hometown “Denton” backwards. They originally started life as a 5 piece with two guitars and keys but have since reduced to today’s line up, but don’t be fooled as these guys pack a full punch for a 3 Piece! The line-up of Steven Lee (Guitar & Lead Vocals) Chris Tollett (Bass / Backing Vocals) and Paul Taff Macey (Drums / Backing Vocals) started work on their live set after moving into Silver Lining Studios, Denton. Once they thought they were ready they wanted to test their new sound out on a local audience, and signed with promoters MCR Music at The Studio, Peter Street, Manchester. This deal afforded them the opportunity to play to a wider audience in Manchester bars and clubs, the most notable of which happened at The Manchester ‘Academy 3’ attracting a following of over 120 people, the success of this gig resulted in numerous other appearances in Manchester including a return to ‘Headline’ the ‘Academy 3’. This gave the band the opportunity to showcase their first EP ‘Nothing comes for free / Mother Junkie’ which had been recorded at Suspect Studios in Hyde. Their Pop/Punk sound and high energy live performance proved so popular that almost every copy of the EP was snapped up on the night. They are regulars on the Northwest music scene, playing Whatfest Music Festival after winning a battle of the bands, allowing them to play in front of crowds of 15,000. They have also appeared on the main stage at Made In Manchester Festival, with headline slots at New Mills One World Festival, Glossop Christmas lights, Bayfest, Hyde Mela as well as frequent appearances on the Manchester Pub Scene. The bands influences include Oasis, The Killers, The Klaxons, The Rolling Stones, Stereophonics, Damien Rice, and Foo Fighters, this makes for a unique sound that combined with gritty vocals and honest lyrics will never be forgotten.

About Tameside met the guys last year at the Hyde Mela event and asked how the band came together?

“We used to be a 5 piece, but we’ve evolved since then. I used to work with Taff at the flour mill and then we got Chris who was a friend of another friend who is also a baker to form the current line up.” said Steve. “With regards to genre we do just stuff that we think sounds good, and if it sounds good then it works” added Chris. “It’s usually me who writes the lyrics working with the acoustic guitar and more recently Chris has come through with a few bits” said Steve. But Chris was quick to add “Because there are three of us, we all pretty much know where we are going with a song, so we usually know within an hour if its going to work or not.” A final comment from Paul to give a word to sum up the band? “Undiscoverd!”
